If your results are positive, we’ll schedule your free pregnancy ultrasound and help you understand your next steps for your pregnancy. Call (252) 519-4357 to schedule your appointment.

Frequently Asked Questions about Pregnancy Confirmation Ultrasounds

  • How does an ultrasound work?
Ultrasounds are relatively simple procedures. A combination ultrasound generator and microphone, called a transducer, is pressed against your skin. The transducer is used to generate and pick up sound waves inside your body. By carefully directing the sound waves, the ultrasound technician can create a “picture” of the inside of your body that appears on a computer monitor. Ultrasounds are 100% safe, non-invasive, and harmless.
  • Why should I get an ultrasound?
An ultrasound is the safest and easiest way to answer several important questions:
    1. Are you really pregnant?
An ultrasound is much more accurate than a hormonal pregnancy test at determining whether you really are pregnant.
    2. Is the pregnancy viable?
Unfortunately, many pregnancies are not viable from the start. Many women - about 25% - experience a natural miscarriage when they become pregnant. Other women experience a tubal pregnancy, where the embryo begins to grow somewhere other than the uterus. Tubal pregnancies require immediate medical attention to avoid major complications.
    3. How old is my pregnancy?
Ultrasounds can give an accurate estimate of the size and development of the embryo. This can be used to determine approximate conception date and due date.
  • Do I need to bring anything to my appointment?
When you come to our center for an ultrasound, you should bring a valid photo ID and be ready to fill out a form requesting services. If you choose, you can also bring along a friend, family member, or other support person to accompany you.
  • How long does an ultrasound take?
Plan on 45 minutes for an ultrasound appointment at our center. During your appointment you’ll also be free to ask questions and to speak to PSC client advocates about your choices and next steps.
